Dodge Journey Search (East) LIVE updates – Day 2

September 25, 2011

I’ll be updating this page as information becomes available for the continuation of the Dodge Journey (East) search starting Sunday morning at 9am.

Be safe. Be courteous. Buckle up and drive carefully. Remember, there can only be one winner. Enjoy the adventure and make some memories. Cheers and Best of luck!

Physical Clues (in World Wide World)

Final location of the Dodge Journey (East):

16 Donut Point Ln.
Tenants Harbor, ME 04860

Final clue: Kenniston Realty in Rockland, ME

Message from phone call (paraphrased, courtesy of Spencer):

Good job, there will be no more clues.  You are within 15 miles of the Journey.

Main Street Prison Showroom -> Angeliques (Antiques) Thomaston, ME

(courtesy of Tobias)

Message from phone call (paraphrased, courtesy of Spencer):

Nice work. Be careful who share this number with. 99% of the people that are hoping to find the Journey, think they can find it from their easy chair. So, don’t undo all own your hard work.

The lands you will be traveling to will have many beautiful properties where you would like to park your Journey.  Look under the first rock.  One will stand out.  If you see it, give the owner a call.

Solution: Continue traveling north along Rte 1 to Rockland, ME and find Kenniston Realty.

Discussion: “The first (rock)” may be a reference to The First, a bank in Rockland along Rte 1, but before Kenniston Realty. This may have confirmed the direction. As this clue was paraphrased, it may have, in fact, been worded as “Look beyond the first rock.”

Red’s Eats at Wiscasset, ME -> Sign Store on Water Street for a clue in the window:

Message from phone call:

Nice work. First things first. Be careful who share this number with. 99% of the people that are hoping to find the Journey, think they can find it from their easy chair. So, don’t undo all own your hard work.

Blend in with the locals as you head north … check out some woodworking made by hard labor.

Or Better yet. We hear antiquing is huge around here, so why not do some window shopping. There’s one in particular that’s named after the owner whose name also rhymes with what she sells. In the window, you’ll find what you’re looking for.

Solution: Travel further north along RTE 1 to Thomaston, ME and Main Street Prison Showroom, then Angeliques (Antiques)

LIVE Feed Clues

  • The Dodge “guy” hangs a ME life preserver
  • The Dodge “guy” eats  a lobster roll (not long after the “last” online clue) while sitting on a red seat :)

Final Clue: Call 207-420-8706 (BLOg, coincidence? maybe. maybe not.)

Message: Congratulations on getting this far but we can’t hold your hand for ever. This will be the last clue you’ll be able to get online. The rest will all require you get out into the real world. Head north and stop when you see the red seats. A few doors north from there, look for a sign.

Solution: Travel further north on Rte 1, to Red’s Eats in Wiscasset, ME [red s/eats]

On 4a now. Hoping they take this thing all the way south until it connect to 11. 4A is super long and mostly residential and private roads with no other outlet than taking it all the way to 11.

Steve – Nice detective work. Do you think I’m right in thinking there are still some 265 miles of travel before the final destination? Everyone was looking for a barn in Enfield last night, but I wonder if the journey isn’t even close to over.

That would have been so much more fitting than the actual location. If there had been a clue referring to ” from sea to shining sea”, it might have made some sense. I wish they would have done alot more educational/historical places instead of street signs. the first two ended up in national parks so I think they could have done a much better job.

    Hominy Pot

In the vicinity of this marker, during the last quarter of the 18th century, were built the first homes and the original schoolhouse of New London. Along this brook, developed by several men at different times, were a saw mill, a grist mill, a carding and cloth-dressing mill, a hat factory, and a shingle mill. — all powered by falling water. This industrial area has been variously called “Minot’s Square,” Harvey’s Mills,” “Trussell’s Mills,” and most lastingly, “Hominy Pot.”

I was one of the many people who went out on this search yesterday thinking it would actually be somewhere near the final clue, in the Schroon Lake/Paradox area. drove about 5 hours from NYC in the afternoon after the final 375 mile clue was given out. by the time I got to around the area, night had already fallen. unfortunately, on top of that, I forgot my laptop charger and my laptop was dying, so had to find a 24 hour Walmart and hopefully find a charger that worked for my laptop. unfortunately the one I found didn’t carry one. I had been tethering my phone to my laptop to keep on top of the latest information from the Youtube page and this blog.

long story short, as soon as we saw that this was going into New Hampshire, while I was busy getting lost in Ticonderoga around 9-10pm, I pretty much gave up. made that long trek back to NYC and got home in the middle of the night. I have to say though, it was a fun ‘journey’ either way, this is something I won’t be forgetting for a while. to think that I had a chance of finding this once I got to the general area was pretty exciting.

Just a thought related to the FB pics. Although I’m puzzled why they would have taken two shots of the same landmark (CALL sign), they album could have just published prematurely, e.g. instead of loading a few more pictures, they pushed the wrong button. Hard to believe that Portland (inside a large city) would be the stopping point, while we hold for additional clues.

They obviously care not about those who have to make a return trip to NY or VT or anywhere else.

They have their own agenda now, and it is to approximate the 500 mile mark or reach the furthest point possible w/o crossing into Canadian territory.

Those who drop off this Trail of Tears are of no consequence to Dodge. They are after the larger internet audience (i.e., us) who outnumber the boots many fold.

This may well backfire on them, however.

I agree with you David. If on one hand, everyone knew well in advance that they would actually be traveling along a route, discovering it as it unfolds (vs figuring out clues and getting close to a final destination), then you could choose and plan accordingly. I do like the notion of really exploring the World Wide World (execution hasn’t be perfect though) and they are getting more mileage out of this one (it IS a marketing campaign) … but they are also missing the practical aspects for the boots on the ground. If this concludes around, let’s say 4 or 5pm tonight, it’s a long journey back (no pun intended).

  203. September 25, 2011 10:52 am

My biggest fear is that all the “work” we did yesterday was absolutely for nothing and Dodge played out the NY/VT scenario just to appease people who came to the area. They gave them their search and used a slide show to bridge to a totally new game (new day, new clues) beginning with a 200 or 300 mile clue noonish beginning in ME. I hope I’m wrong.

To the folks who said Dodge punished us for figuring out the plan ahead of time…

Yup – exactly! They punished us but good.

I wasted an entire day and a couple tanks of gas driving all over the NY/VT ferry area… where the journey WOULD have been if the armchair sleuths didn’t figure out the final destination 5 days before the contest ended.

It was fun riding around wasting gas and trying to get a wifi signal strong enough to open these mile long websites and hidef videos… but… I am a little PO’ed that they moved the journey all the way to freakin eastern Maine!

I dunno if I should be thanking steve for keeping up with the journeys journey or mad at him for being a big part of the reason it ended up in far Eastern Maine instead of NY.

Here’s my pics from my limited search in VT/NY.

  264. September 25, 2011 11:39 am

@KaaDeg: The building, being one of Portland’s tallest, can be seen for many miles around. Many Portlanders depend on the Time and Temperature sign, as it has become a popular landmark on the skyline. Over the years, different sponsors have had messages flashing from the sign, including Portland Savings Bank, WMTW-TV, and most recently, The Law Offices of Joe Bornstein (with the message “CALL” “JOE”). Also, when there is a snowstorm, the words “PARK” and “BAN” flash to remind people not to park on the street during snow removal.

Dodge has really messed this up. Both of the prior searches stayed in the same state. Going as far as Maine appears to be a reaction by Dodge to the online sleuths who figured out many of their clues. The 5 slickly made commercials are a far cry from these random pictures they are using. They could have hidden the car somewhere else in NY or Vt. Still don’t understand the 25 back to 375 thing.

North from Red’s from there would be Water street, you have (from what I can tell: Wiscasset Old General Store, 49 Water Street, 207-882-6622 – I did call to confirm that they were next door)

After that: Water Street Antiques: 207-882-9700 – no answer.

i have a feeling that are messing with us, as i recall on the last leg we drove to elk city to get a clue further from where we needed to go only to pull us away from Black Kettle Grassland. If anyone noticed in the last video he was peeling potatoes which could have referred to kettle potato chips. so what the hell do lobsters and chickens and barns boats and horse drawing equipment have in common

  473. September 25, 2011 2:15 pm

What if it is not an actual building. What if it is a stage – like a set – that they have put up for this? I mean could that be possible?

The other two were out in the open – so this would have to be right? Kind of hiding in plain sight?

I wouldn’t think they would have it on private property. Would have to be something with at least public access?

After World War II, however, the Belfast economy was driven by its poultry industry, including 2 of the state’s larger processors, Maplewood and Penobscot Poultry. Waldo County farms supplied the factories with up to 200,000 birds a day. The annual Broiler Festival became a popular summer event, attracting both local people and tourists. But the poultry business collapsed in the mid-1970s during a national recession, devastating the city and surrounding towns. In the early 1980s, the defunct chicken-feed silos that once fed millions of chickens at the foot of Main Street were demolished.

If you go to Rockport, Maine which is 25 miles East of the last clue (which was Journeys End boat narbor which is in Penobscot Bay (website actually says its not the end of the journey, its the beginnign) then go to Reds Eats (famous Lobster shack in Rockport) – then head a few doors north and look for the sign you’ll see “Route 1″. If you go North on route 1 and go 300 miles you’ll just barely be in canada… but at the end of route 1 is Fort Peck, and Monument Park (287 Miles away) so its approx…. Along the way you’d see another “Eagle Lake” and another “Acadia park”. It is the “beginning of the end” of the longest East Coast highway that runs all the way to Key West (the furthest southern point in the US). If thats not it, then I would be surprised – but it sure sounds logical. Wish I was near maine, but live outside DC and have no hope of getting there. If someone else actually finds it there because this happens to work out it will be 2 days of searching “well spent”.

I think going to Red’s Eats and then the red seats is the right thing to find the sign. It include’s the phone clue and the red chair clue. Just to the east of Red’s Eats (maybe 100 feet) across a little road, not paved and (not named )and RR tracks are red hexagonal bench/table seats. That little road goes north and it’s not paved so street view doesn’t follow, but there’s only maybe five individual places on the west side of that little road.

Okay – that is about as light and clear as I can get the capture of the live shot with a screen.

im not sure we are getting a good reflection from the actual headlight…could be distorted by the light used to highlight the car, or distorted by internal shape of headlight reflector…might be better to use the reflection in bumber/fender area

    • September 25, 2011 3:09 pm

Yes, I agree. The clue should be at the Fairfield Sign Shop at 51 Water Street #C, just up from Red’s Eats. Look in the window, under the mat, on the door, on the sign for shop, if they are open today, go in and ask. I believe it will be there.

    in Wiscasset.
    They also have chickens.

    • September 25, 2011 3:13 pm

Yes, those are horse collars. All the props are consistent with working horses. Yesterday, the guy on the feed also made a big show of cleaning up “manure” behind the vehicle, like it took a dump on the floor. The manure fork is still on the back wall on the right.

      • September 25, 2011 3:22 pm

Buckwheat Blossom Farm (156 Gardiner Rd, Wiscasset 04578) uses their horses to plow. But from the looks of the photos on their blog, it would seem like the collars are too small. There’s a barn in Google maps that might match and shots of their other outbuildings show similar post and beam construction.

I’ve been looking at that damn Time & Temperature building, (the last visual clue), out my apartment window, two blocks away for 17 years. I just dragged myself back into said apartment after traveling about 625 miles round trip; driving up dirt roads in Paradox and Schroon Lake, and sleeping in my car at Ticonderoga. I feel like I’ve just been made the butt of a cosmic joke! Regardless, I enjoyed your blog Steven and the contributions made by other bloggers. Nice to see the generosity of souls without a chance of winning the vehicle. BTW, With nothing but a U.S. atlas, an old, awkward laptop, (with a dead battery), a basic cell phone and a 1997 Subaru Outback with a non-functioning odometer, (MY search engine for the “World Wide World”), I missed an exit on the way and ended up in Bethel, VT where I witnessed some of the devastation wrought by Hurricane Irene. I think someone needs to backtrack – go back to monument square at the CALL JOE Time and Temp building. Find due north and get on foot! Find some red seats, go two doors down, look for a sign.

We are missing something here – that sign has to be located. It is crucial!

    Hi guys,
I’ve been following this forum for awhile, but this is my first post. My boyfriend is on the ground. He read the the sign in the window of the sign shop a few doors down from Red’s Eats- “Life is a journey, not a destination 1-888-xxx-xxxx”

When we called the number, it said to go north, look for woodworking and windowshop at an antique store that’s owner’s name rhymes with what they sell and in that window “you’ll find what you’re looking for”

There’s a store called Shady Lady, but there’s not much in that window.

    Any help is appreciated :)

From Red’s, the sign shop is one block north.
The Shady Lady is on the south side of Water St, but he couldn’t find anything meaningful in the window.

        September 25, 2011 3:46 pm

OK. Here’s the full message (because of the first part and to be fair to your boyfriends progress – I removed the number from your post)

“Nice work.

In the window, you’ll find what you’re looking for.”

I like Shady Lady … but if that’s south on Water Street, it seems like the wrong direction … “blend in with the locals as you head north” is curious … there are a lot of antiques shops, will start to check. Worth mentioning: Dodge said someone was 15 miles away. I believe the only way they could know that is my getting the phone call and this location is within 15 miles (unless there’s another one :( )

It may not be near Red’s but further north … that’s a personal call. Switching over to search now.

  632. September 25, 2011 4:18 pm

    STEVEN please read this.

I was literally blocked from the Dodge discussion feed on my Youtube account because I was giving out clues leading very close to the Journey.

I was looking at some of the tweets from Dodge and I noticed something odd… Right before the first clue was unveiled, they sent out this tweet:

“Gather your search party and stock up on beef jerky. The East coast #JourneySearch begins tomorrow at 12PM EDT. YouTube.com/dodge”

Nothing too weird. But then… After the fifth clue, and some time, I noticed this second tweet (in response to someone’s picture of their “dinner”, a piece of bread and peanut butter)

“Hmm. Add some beef jerky? @prestondabbs Dinner. #JourneySearch http://t.co/eqg5cjUU

So I thought I saw ‘beef jerky’ twice, and sure enough I was right. So I figure this has to be some sort of clue. So then, I started searching for beef jerky companies. I found Smith’s Log Smokehouse (http://logsmokehouse.net/). It’s apparently a semi-popular beef products store/company in rural Maine. I checked their contact us page, and saw that they are in Monroe, ME. I added this to the end of the route that Steven had compiled from the slideshow pictures, and Monroe, Maine is very close to 500 miles from the original starting point. So then I was thinking, since the other two were in state/national park areas, is there any place like this near Monroe? Sure enough, I found a tiny blip on the map: Swan Lake State Park. I checked Google Maps with satellite imagery to try to find the building/barn that the car could be in, and I think it might very well be this: http://g.co/maps/8jkhv . Every location except for the last two is from imagery from the slideshows or official clues.

after examing the video clues and comparing with the live shot, I will say definately it is a prop made to look like wherever the clues were shot. Perhaps it is inside a warehouse which would explain why there are no sounds except what THEY WANT YOU TO HEAR.
If it was a chicken barn…it would be filthy and NOT look like a clean pristine barn. I have chickens….they are gross….old barns also have unevenly worn floors,,,this floor is perfectly flat….more smoke and mirrors?

Walnut hill Barn looks good but the floors are not tarnished and the floor boards go the wrong way. The car would have to be at the end of the barn and 1 pic of end of barn didn’t show the same backdrop as what is behind the car. It was a chicken coup in past and is rented too just doesn’t match up from pics.

Look for the lady whose name rhymes with what she sells, and look in the window. It will probably be another phone number to call for another exclusive clue. The lady probably signed an non-disclosure agreement, so calling the shop and asking her won’t help…even going into her store and asking her won’t help. You probably have to be there in person at the antique store, and find the phone number in the window for the next clue……the Journey must be hidden within a 15-mile radius of Red’s Eats, Wiscassett, Maine.

Definatelty a created production set. The barn is a replica. Its not the one in the video clips. There are no columns in the clip barn but are in the live feed. The number and construction of the purlins is different for one, as are board width on the board & battans.

Even the sunlight and it’s movement is a college 101 class for any film student. Everyone has been looking for a real & old barn, yet it may not be the case. Renting a warehouse and using it as a film stage would be more cost effective and less liability for the actual property owner. Likewise, it would make finding this one limited to the ones actually out there, limit the webs influence, eliminate any “eyes in the sky”, and maintain the integity of the event, especially after the midwest fiasco.

    Junk food for thought.

We headed to Albany from CT convinced that the Journey would end where it began. Exactly where it began! I have a picture of our car in the exact spot the Journey was in when the family left. They used a neighborhood in Albany and my partner Nick was able to locate it using Google in spite of the fact that there was no street view. Directly across the street was a parking garage with a lock box hanging from a lamp. It drove us nuts! The upstairs of the garage was unused and there were lights on. While we soon realized it was unlikely to be up there, the lock box bugged us. We wondered if 4 digits would open it. We even tried 1984 after the Orwell slide. We had our fingers crossed for a loop back to Albany after the slide show. Paradox, after all, is the Indian word for water flowing backward. But it was not to be. Congrats to Melissa and thank you Steven for making this extra fun. We still have questions. Was this the original plan all along? Weren’t the video clues too well done in the barn to have been last minute? Oh! And would you like to see the picture?

I still want to make the letters from the Wild West sign spell something. As I looked back over my efforts from yesterday, I saw “SIGN STORE.” From the remaining letters we can almost get anGELIQue. But that’s a stretch.

BTW, With nothing but a U.S. atlas, an old, awkward laptop, (with a dead battery), a basic cell phone and a 1997 Subaru Outback, (my search engine for the “World Wide World”), I missed an exit on the way and ended up in Bethel, VT where I witnessed some of the devastation wrought by Hurricane Irene. Thinking of those people tonight.

Just got back from Rockland. Boots on the ground was a blast! We ran out of the house as soon as the cell number came up on the screen around noon. I recognized it as a local Maine cell #, as I live in the Lewiston/.Auburn area up here. Unfortunately, left the power cord for the Mifi and my laptop at home in our rush! Red’s Eats was an easy one for us, as we had been exploring that area a couple of times earlier this month. There is always a traffic jam in Wiscasset center, so you get to look at everything there as you wait for the cars to start moving again.

I knew about the prison store also, as I had thought about Christmas shopping there a couple of years ago.

Thanks Steven for hosting this site! The virtual hunt was a ton of fun. When we saw it was in Maine this morning, we got really excited!

The last few clues we had to do without internet at all, and it was so much fun. We came within 3 miles of the final destination, just by luck, then had to turn back to get home to let the dogs out. Still, lots of fun and a a great journey. I said to my sister the best thing to do would be to get lost and happen upon it. We were heading down 131, when I figured it was time to turn around for home. We didn’t even have a good map to look at.

On our way up to the Midcoast, two cars passed us going around 90 mph on Route 1. Not cool. :-( One was from NH and it was a blue dodge with a young dude driving. Racing him was a white SUV with RI plates. People can kind of suck. I’m glad they didn’t hurt anybody. Saw the dude in the blue car pulling out of the Wiscasset street where the sign shop was heading south. Hope he went the wrong way!

There was a young lady sitting on a bench in front of a little building next to the prison woodcraft store in Thomaston. We asked her and she told us about Angelique’s. Saw her tell two others also. We wondered if she just happened to be there, or was part of the hunt.

The Real Estate place was on a corner that you had to drive by because of a detour in Rockland center. Pretty funny.

All in all, what a trip! Thanks again to Steven and everybody. Maybe next time, we’ll get closer… :-)

Home from the hockey game! At least I can say I did SOMETHING besides sit in front of this computer all weekend. LOL!

I just want to say a sincere thanks to Steven for hosting the party and also thanks to a wonderful group of internet friends who came together and conducted themselves in a friendly, civil and supportive way. It doesn’t happen that often anymore on the web. Maybe I’m just hanging out in the wrong places. :-)

    This party rocked!

Whelp, I’m back home after 14 hours on the road chasing clues. The closest I came was finding the sign near Red’s Eats, and then went North on Route 1.

We were looking frantically for antique shops with any sort of rhyming name… but totally missed Angelique’s as we drove through Thomaston. And I had no idea what the hard labor wood working clue was about, I was looking for one of those chainsaw sculptor places… but now I see that the Maine State Prison Workworking museum place was essentially down the street from Angeliques.

So, missing those two clues, we continued down Route 1 for quite a ways chasing ultimately useless clues.

If we had caught Angeliques, it would have been several hours before the find, so we would have had a really good chance, with only the realty place, and then the house remaining. We felt it would definitely be near the water, what with the jet ski theme, so we might have head towards where the house was, can’t say without knowing what the clue actually said.

All in all it was fun, just mad at ourselves for not coming up with Angeliques. It was a really well written clue, because its hard to nail down that name when you’re not 100% sure you’re looking for something that rhymes with Antique, and when the store doesn’t really advertise as an antique store, but a furniture store.

Once we drove by those two places in the real world, we were toast.

    Had fun though. Cheers.

Big, public thanks to Steven! You cannot run a promotional contest for a national brand and not expect people to collaborate online. It wasn’t a puzzle made *by* puzzlers *for* puzzlers. It was a commercial promo to raise brand-awareness for a model of car. It was specifically about getting as many people involved as possible, and in as public a manner as possible. Dodge got that, but they weren’t ready to handle it.

People angry about Saturday’s goose chase shouldn’t take issue with Steven or anyone else working together online. Dodge, however, should probably have had someone besides their ad agency help them plan, predict, and execute this promotion. Dodge isn’t used to building anything with fast iterations. They don’t make products where scalability or user load testing is a big issue. If their creative directors had had a background in software product management, they might have known to consider the proverbial “could you handle a million users tomorrow” question, as it could have been anticipated to apply to the Journey search. But what makes people good at creative arts is sometimes the opposite of what makes people good at planning obsessively thorough, detailed specs and requirements.(If Dodge needs a “creative” QA manager the next time around, maybe they’ll call me. ;-) Anyway, it wasn’t Steven’s fault, for sure!

    Steven,
Any comment on the fact that this was clearly Dodge’s back pocket plan once all your (and co.) sleuthing deduced the original location? I bet they never expected people to figure things out so fast with the video. Only foul was those individuals that drove up to the original destination and then got the playing field leveled Sunday. I, personally, spent a good bit of time following all of this (actually had much more fun following the MidWest hunt) but glad I never made the decision to drive up to the vicinity of the original location – as I was only 4 hours away but realized something funny was going to happen. Anyway thanks for the fun.

Nothing beyond an acknowledgement that “my diligence kept them on their toes.” ;) However, I like to look at this way: the treasure hunt evolved, and for the better.

With the first two, after some good detective work of course, you could pretty well pinpoint the location within 20 miles. And if you were a local, like for the West search (and even Midwest search, controversy aside) , you had a considerable advantage in identifying those scenes and tracking down the Journey. And then, it became an Easter Egg hunt.

You also heard a lot of criticism about the campaign message, e.g. “you won’t find any of them online but it might help you figure out where they might be,” when it really was essential to use the World Wide Web to find the Journey in the World Wide World. I didn’t think there was anything wrong at all, however, because not everyone could get out and find one, e.g. they were handicapped, they lived too far away or couldn’t afford it, etc. This was a (clever) marketing campaign, designed to create brand awareness, so engaging a larger, national audience over a regional audience, would translate to campaign success, something in my view, they achieved.

By evolving the hunt into an adventurous race to an unpredictable destination, that span many states, they had held more closely to their message: life (as well as this contest) is a journey, not a destination.

      All the best!

    Steve,

Here is a picture of the Angelique’s Antiques clue posted by Tobias Walker on Facebook, It was a miniature model of a Journey and a phone number. Looked like just another item for sale in the window!

Also, you might want to add this to the live feed clue info. When the Dodge guy was eating the lobster roll, he was sitting in a bright red chair. Red seat / Red’s Eats. He made a deliberate show of putting the chair out and letting it stay on camera for a while before he actually sat down in it and started eating the sandwich. For me, this absolutely confirmed Red’s Eats was the place to go to start the real world search.

LOL. I missed that. Great observation and I agree. I was so busy trying to reply to posts, update the blog that I really didn’t get a chance to watch much. They deliberately worded the message as the Red S|eats but it was just an intentional play on words. A good change up from the prior bread crumb trail from VT to ME – it certainly stopped many in their tracks.

I really wanted to sign up and comment earlier but didn’t want to be actively involved in speculation as I actually went on the search with my family. But I have to say I was a little disappointed at the way they went about with the adjustment.

My family was driven off the road on one occasion in VT when the first route clue appeared and I truly from the bottom of my heart got soooo much more enjoyment on Saturday with starting our day in Shoreham and investigating and being able to take the time to enjoy the scenery. Sunday was like the movie Death race. I came home so exhausted this is the first time I could bring myself to read anything how it ended.

Seeing how they did the end was how they should have done the whole second day. Make people get out and look around. I agree with Steven about the whole educational aspect. It would have been awesome if they did phone in clues but sneak in things like the memorial for so and so in Enfield, VT must be read to complete the address of the next clue. Then have the address lead them to another town and so on. Just something to get people to get out of their cars and read. I mean realistically they could have created a fake band website and sent the guys out begging to put their flyers up as they drove down the road to set up the clues. Then make them say something like awesome concert in such and such memorial park on such and such street, then do another phone number to lead them on.

Now that would have been awesome! We were so close, yet it feels like we were so far away.

Oh and if the guy from Mass in the red SUV with the dog that we chatted with in Vermont is on this site, thank you for being the only truly cordial competitor we came across. We met aside Delong road in Shoreham VT and you were the only one who did not treat us like an enemy with suspicion in your eyes. Perhaps if more folks behaved as you I would have enjoyed this more.

    I’ll shut up now :)

Hi Heather. I’m glad you got out there and gave it go with your family :) Hopefully, you caught some sights and made some memories. It’s a shame that some participants lost sight of the real opportunity, to have an adventure while exploring parts of our country. There can only be one winner and if you’re completely consumed with that solitary goal, you’ll come up short every time. Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts and experiences. All the best and cheers!

    Hi Steve,

Well I truely did not think I was going to make this Journey, but I did. My wife thought the location to be pegged at the Calvin Coolidge ranch after seeing pictures of the many barns on the property and noting it to be in the town of Plymouth (a gone Chrysler brand). So, I jumped a flight from Orlando at 7pm Fri night and landed in Boston at about 9:30pm. Did not get to the Coolidge ranch until about 2am. No signs of life what so ever!
Back to square one and your page! I slept in the car until about 7am, when I hit the road headed towards Concorde via Woodstock. It was about there that the next clues started coming in and I was already traveling on route 4A.
As the first ‘Call’ clue came up, I was headed towards Rockland. Based on the clue, I figured they were saying ‘the red jeeps’. That took me to a jeep dealer along US1. Nope. Then the chatter started about Red’s Eats, both here and on the Dodge page. Bingo! Only about 12min from my current location and I was off.

Sadly, it seemed that is where the trail went cold on the internet:-( Those of us who were inspired by your site and used it as our biggest tool got greedy, myself included. I was, from my estimates on the scene, about the 5th person at the sandwich board. I did see Melissa there as well in town (I should have hitched my wagon to that star :-) . But, it seems that with the scent of blood in the air no one cared to share this clue or the next until it was too late. I would wager that if shared, myself and a few others would have benefited from your page again and been on our way.

I was looking for the realtor clue when Melissa found the car. Kudos to both her and you for being terrific sleuths!

I flew back home on Sunday at 8am. My only regret was the huge speeding fine I got in NH. The officer told me he had heard no chatter on the radio about any free car:-( Everything was beyond fair and the car was anybody’s. You just had to physically be there!

Hi Raj. Glad you made the trip (and you’re the second person that I’m aware of who traveled from Florida). You were definitely in the hunt :)

Sadly, in the eleventh hour of the race, after they switched to real world clues, stalled by red seats, solid information was scarce and speculation was rampant (something I prefer to avoid). I was thrilled to have someone finally share the clue from the sign shop but time was fleeting.

Regardless, it sounds like you had quite a memorable adventure … except for ticket, of course :(

Thanks for sharing your story. All the best! Steve
